# Free online GLB and glTF viewer

> View GLB and glTF 3D models in your browser with their PBR materials and textures. Multi-file .gltf scenes open from a folder or ZIP — free, no upload, no account.

Drop a .glb, or a .gltf with its .bin and textures, to see it with its materials. Everything is processed in your browser — nothing is uploaded. The tool is interactive: open https://freestlviewer.com/glb-viewer/ and drop a file onto the page.

## glTF and GLB in one paragraph

glTF 2.0 is the Khronos Group's open format for delivering 3D scenes —
often called "the JPEG of 3D". It stores meshes, a node hierarchy,
physically based (PBR) materials, textures, skinning and animation in a form
that real-time engines can load with little processing. It comes in two
packagings: **`.gltf`**, a JSON file that points to separate `.bin` buffers and
image files, and **`.glb`**, a single binary file that contains everything.

GLB is what web stores, AR pipelines and most 3D-asset sites hand out, because
one file is hard to break.

## How to open a GLB or glTF here

1. **For a .glb:** drag it onto the drop zone above, or click **Choose 3D
   file**.
2. **For a .gltf:** drag the whole folder, select the `.gltf`, `.bin` and
texture files together, or drop a ZIP of them. A lone `.gltf` usually cannot
load, because its geometry lives in the `.bin`.
3. The scene opens full screen. Select **Original** as the model colour to see
its materials; pick a solid colour to judge the shape alone.
4. Rotate, zoom and pan, switch to orthographic or wireframe view, and on a
computer measure distances or open the mesh analysis.

If a referenced file is missing, Mes3D lists it by name instead of showing an
empty scene.

## What is shown

- Every mesh in the scene, with its node transforms applied.
- PBR base colour and textures in the Original view.
- Bounding-box dimensions and triangle count.
- Volume, surface area, watertightness and overhang ratio in the analysis
panel — handy when a GLB from a 3D-asset site is meant to be printed.

What it is not: an animation player or a material editor. Animations are not
played, and lighting is the viewer's own neutral setup rather than the scene's
lights.

## Compressed GLB files

Many GLB files on the web are compressed to download faster:

| Compression | What it does | Opens in Mes3D? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| None | Plain buffers | Yes |
| Draco (`KHR_draco_mesh_compression`) | Compresses mesh geometry | Not yet |
| Meshopt (`EXT_meshopt_compression`) | Compresses buffers | Not yet |
| KTX2 / Basis (`KHR_texture_basisu`) | GPU-compressed textures | Not yet |

If a GLB will not open and came from a web pipeline, compression is the likely
cause. The open-source glTF-Transform command line can write an uncompressed
copy, and most 3D tools (Blender included) can re-export without it.

## GLB for printing

GLB is a display format: it is excellent for web and AR, but slicers mostly
expect STL or 3MF. Before printing a GLB, check two things:

- **Is it closed?** Display models are often built from open surfaces and
intersecting pieces. The analysis panel reports open and non-manifold edges.
- **What size is it?** glTF is defined in metres, while printing works in
millimetres. Check the dimensions before you send it to a slicer.

The guide to [watertight and manifold meshes](https://freestlviewer.com/blog/watertight-and-manifold-stl-files/)
explains what to do when the check fails.

## On a phone

GLB files open in a mobile browser here for viewing, rotating and dimensions.
The Mes3D app for iPhone, iPad and Android opens GLB attachments directly, and
adds AR so you can place the model in the room in front of you, plus
measuring, mesh analysis and cross-sections. On iPhone and iPad, installing it
also gives `.glb` and `.gltf` files a 3D preview and thumbnail in the Files
app.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between GLB and glTF?

They hold the same data. A .gltf is a JSON file that usually references separate .bin geometry and image files; a .glb packs all of that into one binary file. GLB is easier to share because it is a single file.

### Why does my .gltf not open?

A .gltf usually depends on a .bin file and texture images stored next to it. Opening only the .gltf leaves those behind. Drop the whole folder, all the files together, or a ZIP of them; if something is still missing, Mes3D names the file.

### Does the viewer support Draco-compressed GLB files?

Not yet. GLB files that use Draco or Meshopt mesh compression, or KTX2 textures, do not open in Mes3D at the moment. Tools such as glTF-Transform can write an uncompressed copy.

### Can I see the original materials?

Yes. Choose Original as the model colour in the toolbar to see the file's own PBR materials and textures; any other colour replaces them so you can inspect the geometry.
