Two ways to open STL files on a Mac

Browser (this page) Mes3D for Mac
Install Nothing Mac App Store, macOS 14 Sonoma or later
Open a file Drag it onto the page Double-click in Finder, or Open With
Measure, dimensions, volume Yes, free Yes
Formats STL, 3MF, STEP, OBJ, PLY, glTF/GLB, USDZ, 3DM and more STL, 3MF, OBJ, PLY, glTF/GLB, USD/USDZ and more
Works offline Once the page has loaded Yes
Your file is uploaded Never Never

If you open an STL now and then, the browser is enough. If STL files are part of your week — downloads from Printables or MakerWorld, parts from a client — a native app that opens them with a double-click is more comfortable.

Open an STL in your browser (no install)

  1. Open this page in Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Edge.
  2. Drag the .stl from Finder onto the drop zone above, or click Choose 3D file.
  3. Rotate with the trackpad or mouse, pinch or scroll to zoom, and use the preset views and orthographic projection to look straight down an axis.
  4. Click two points to measure the distance between them, read the overall width, height and depth, or open the analysis panel for volume, surface area, estimated print weight and a watertightness check.

The file is read by the browser on your Mac and never uploaded, so this works for confidential client parts too.

Make STL files open with a double-click

macOS needs an installed app to associate with .stl. With Mes3D for Mac (or any other STL-capable app) installed:

  1. In Finder, select any .stl file and press ⌘I (Get Info).
  2. Under Open with, choose the app.
  3. Click Change All… and confirm.

Every STL now opens in that app. Repeat for .3mf or .obj if you want those to open the same way.

Mes3D for Mac

Mes3D is the same viewer as the iPhone and iPad app, running natively on macOS 14 Sonoma and later. It registers for STL, 3MF, OBJ, PLY, glTF/GLB, USD/USDZ, 3DS, AMF and OFF files, keeps a library of the models you open, and adds the tools that need more than a quick look: measuring, mesh analysis with wall-thickness and problem-area views, cross-sections, and resizing or cutting a model and exporting it as STL, OBJ or 3MF. It is free to download; some features are paid.

The App Store button on this page leads to the Mes3D listing, which you can open in the Mac App Store.

Other good options on macOS

Being fair to the alternatives:

  • Slicers — PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, Bambu Studio and Cura are free, open STL and 3MF, and are the right tool if you are about to print.
  • Blender — free and opens nearly every format, but heavy if you only want to look.
  • F3D — a small, fast, open-source viewer.

Common problems on a Mac

The model is tiny or huge. STL has no units. If a part opens 25.4 times too small, it was exported in inches — see does an STL file have units?.

The file will not open at all. It may be a renamed file of another format, or a sliced .gcode.3mf print job rather than a model. Mes3D names the problem instead of showing an empty scene.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open an STL file on a Mac?

The quickest way is a browser viewer: open freestlviewer.com in Safari or Chrome and drop the .stl onto the page. For a double-click workflow, install a Mac app that registers for STL files — Mes3D for macOS, a slicer such as PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer or Bambu Studio, or Blender — and set it as the default under Get Info → Open with → Change All.

Is there a free STL viewer for Mac?

Yes. The Mes3D web viewer is free and works in any Mac browser without installing anything, including measuring and volume on a Mac. The Mes3D Mac app is free to download, with some features paid. Free desktop programs such as PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, Blender and F3D also open STL files.

What do I need to run Mes3D for Mac?

macOS 14 Sonoma or later. It is a native Mac app from the Mac App Store, on the same App Store listing as the iPhone and iPad app.

Can I measure an STL on a Mac?

Yes. In the web viewer on a Mac, click two points on the model to get the distance in millimetres, read the width, height and depth, and open the analysis panel for volume, surface area and estimated print weight.
